INSTRUCTORS NOTE: Moving furniture in a home can be very risky. It is a good policy to have the home owner be responsible for removing all of the furniture from the room, or moving it at least 4 feet away from the walls you will finish. It is also very important to have the home owner remove all small items such as lamps, mirrors, artwork, books, knick-knacks, etc., as accidents with small items occur when drop cloths are placed over them instead of having them removed from the room.

Taking the time to clearly explain your customer's responsibilities and what is expected of them will help elliminate communication problems throughout the project. It is also important to inspect the project area with your customer prior to the start of the project; this avoids you being held responsible for any previous painter’s mistakes. "Before" photographs can also be helpful. Additionally, if your customer needs to clean the project site before you begin the project, be sure to tell them right away.
